It may seem like there have been more, but FC Barcelona have only played three Copa del Rey finals in Seville. As such, 26 April will make it four in the city of the Guadalquivir river, out of the 43 the blaugranes have reached in their history. However, the records also show that there was a European Cup final and a Spanish Super Cup final played in the Andalusian capital.
From Copa del Rey joy in the first...
The link between FC Barcelona and finals in Seville began on 10 May 1925 at the Reina Victoria stadium. It was a chapter of success, as the blaugranes lifted the trophy after defeating Arenas Club de Getxo 0-2. Josep Samitier and Agustí Sancho scored the goals that brought immense joy to FC Barcelona fans, marking their sixth Copa del Rey win during the club's golden age.
This moment of happiness involved legendary players such as Férenc Plattkó, defenders Josep Planas, Andreu Bosch, Agustí Sancho, Domènec Carulla, Vicente Piera, Emili Sagi, and Pep Samitier. However, this success gave way to a tough night in Barça's history of finals in Seville. For the second final in this review, we move to 1986 and the European Cup final.
...to European disappointment in the second
Barça lost their first final in the Andalusian capital at the Sánchez Pizjuán stadium. It was a day of misfortune for the team coached by Terry Venables against Steaua Bucharest. It was the blaugranes' second European Cup final, and it ended in defeat. The Romanian side claimed glory thanks to their goalkeeper, Helmuth Duckadam, who thwarted FC Barcelona. The game ended 0-0, and Duckadam saved four penalties from Alexanco, Pedraza, Pichi Alonso, and Marcos Alonso.
Before discussing the third event in this story of single-match finals, note that three Spanish Super Cup finals were played in Seville, but they were two-legged affairs. Barça won them all in the Catalan capital, as the return legs were at Spotify Camp Nou, defeating Betis in 2005, and Sevilla in 2010 and 2016.
The Benito Villamarín stadium hosted the third
It took 33 years for FC Barcelona to compete in another trophy final in Seville as a single match. This occurred at the Benito Villamarín stadium, resulting in another disappointing outcome. Ernesto Valverde's side reached the 2019 Copa del Rey final aiming for a fifth consecutive title. Despite stars like Messi, Piqué, Busquets, and Rakitic, they could not prevent Valencia from claiming the Copa del Rey in Seville.
Two more in 2021 with different outcomes
Seville seemed to bring bad luck for FC Barcelona, as in 2021, the blaugranes lost another final at the La Cartuja stadium. Played without fans due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Athletic Club defeated Ronald Koeman's Barça side in the Spanish Super Cup single-match final.
However, the story ended on a high note with the last final in the Andalusian capital that year. Ronald Koeman's team avenged their loss by defeating Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey final at the La Cartuja stadium, which will host the upcoming final between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid on 26 April.
The match resulted in a resounding 0-4 victory, securing the Copa del Rey and adding it to the Museum. This trophy holds special significance as it was Leo Messi's last with the club, while also marking the first for emerging talents like Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, Araujo, Ansu Fati, and Iñaki Peña. Current squad members are eager to create more success in Seville and add another chapter to FC Barcelona's storied history in finals.
