It's early in the 2024-25 NBA campaign, however, the Warriors could have to navigate the next few games without Stephen Curry.
The star guard for Golden State exited the team's 112-104 loss to the Clippers on Sunday night with an ankle sprain. He left in the third quarter and did make a brief return in the fourth quarter before aggravating the injury.
Curry finished the game with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including four 3-pointers. He also added six assists in the losing effort.
So far in this season, the 36-year-old sharpshooter is averaging 18.3 points, 6.7 assists and 5.3 rebounds for the 2-1 Warriors. He is shooting 41.5% from the field, along with 40.7% from beyond the arc.
Stephen Curry injury update
Curry suffered a left ankle sprain during the third quarter of the Warriors' loss to the Clippers.
He initially hurt the ankle with three minutes to go in the third quarter when he turned his ankle trying to cut without the ball. Curry immediately checked himself out of the game, limping to the bench.
After he was seen talking to the Golden State athletic training staff, he checked back into the game in the fourth quarter. However, his return lasted less than a minute, as he hurt the ankle again trying to fight through a screen.
This time, he was helped immediately to the locker room.
Golden State head coach Steve Kerr said that Curry was doing "OK" after the game, and that the guard used the words "mild or moderate" to describe the injury.
Curry reportedly has a left peroneal strain, and will be re-evaluated Friday, the team confirmed. Curry did not sustain structural damage to his leg, an MRI revealed.
How long is Stephen Curry out for?
It's currently unclear how long Curry will be out for. He was undergoing an MRI on Sunday night to assess the sprained ankle.
According to ESPN's Kendra Andrews, the team is reportedly preparing for him to miss "possibly several games." Curry has dealt with sprains to the left ankle on multiple occasions throughout his career.
"I feel more comfortable that we can withstand an absence offensively without Steph because of [our] depth," Kerr said.
If he were to miss time, Kerr pointed to Andrew Wiggins as a player that could see an increased offensive role with their leading scorer sidelined.
