Germany beat Bosnia and Herzegovina with two goals from Deniz Undav during the UEFA Nations League Group A A3 match in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on 11 October 2024.
Deniz Undav was the hero for Germany as he scored twice, helping the visitors take control of the match in Zenica. The Stuttgart player scored twice in the first half, helping the visitors take control of the match. He could have scored a hat trick had VAR not intervened in the second half. The hosts made it a tense finale when Edin Dzeko pulled one back, but Germany held on.
Germany kept their unbeaten start to this season's Nations League going with a narrow 2-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Deniz Undav was on the scoreboard twice in the first half, helping the visitors take the lead in Zenica. Edin Džeko brought Bosnia and Herzegovina back into the game with 20 minutes to go, but Julian Nagelsmann's team held on to consolidate their position at the top of Group A3.
Germany made the breakthrough just after the half-hour mark when Florian Wirtz beat the offside trap and caught Joshua Kimmich's lob into the box. He then showed great awareness by passing the ball to Undav, who cleverly fired it into the hands of the Bosnian goalkeeper, Nikola Vasili.
The hosts almost responded five minutes later when Elmedin Demirovic hit the crossbar. However, they were 2-0 down within 60 seconds when Maximilian Mittelstadt's cross was headed home by Undav from close range.
Just before the 60th minute, it looked like Undav had a hat-trick, but after a lengthy VAR review, it was ruled that he was offside.
The offside flag also stopped Serge Gnabry from scoring, and with 20 minutes left, Bosnia had a glimmer of hope when Dzeko took a penalty from Benjamin Tahirovic's corner.
It was a bit of a consolation for the home team, but the visitors held on for the win.
While the team came away with the three points, it could have been a disaster for Nagelsmann's side. It's worth noting that they'd only won four of their 13 games outside of Germany and just one of their nine away games in the Nations League.
However, after weathering Bosnia's strong start, Undav's quickfire brace shifted the momentum firmly in their favour. If it hadn't been for the offside flag stopping them three times, their lead would have been much more significant.
Fortunately, they managed to stay focused after Dzeko's header. They did just that, and ended up winning the game with seven out of nine points.
