Serbia defeated Austria 2-0 at the Rajko Mitic stadium to secure a 3-1 aggregate win and extend their unbeaten run in the UEFA Nations League (UNL) to six games.

After Thursday's 1-1 draw in Vienna, it was difficult to pick a winner in this match, given both sides' strong recent UNL records.

Serbia were forced to play in front of a reduced home crowd following a UEFA sanction, and that seemed to have a negative impact on the Eagles in the first half as Austria controlled proceedings and looked more likely to open the scoring.

The away side thought they had taken the lead with just six minutes on the clock when Konrad Laimer fired home from inside the area, but the midfielder was adjudged to have been in an offside position when he received the pass.

Dusan Vlahovic's left-footed shot from 25 yards flew narrowly past the post as Serbia began to work their way into the contest, but the visitors went close again soon after when Romano Schmid's effort from near the byline was tipped over by goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic to ensure the scores remained level at the break.

Having looked unthreatening in attack, Serbia were helped by the fact that they took the lead with their first shot on target.

Nicolas Seiwald's pass to Alexander Schlager was misjudged by the goalkeeper and the ball ricocheted off the post before Nemanja Maksimovic was the quickest to react and flick the ball home to put the Eagles ahead in rather comical fashion.

The goal seemed to give the home side some confidence and a through ball looked to have found substitute Luka Jovic, but Schlager came off his line decisively to close the gap and get to the ball just before the striker to clear the danger.

Austria's task of clawing their way back into the game was made all the more difficult with just over 20 minutes remaining when Gernot Trauner was shown a straight red card for a cynical challenge on the last man.

Having had an earlier goal ruled out for offside, Vlahovic made sure he had the last laugh in the first minute of stoppage time when he burst into the box and unleashed a shot that found the bottom corner to seal victory and ensure Serbia will be back in League A in 2026/27, while Austria will remain in League B.
