Two goals in three minutes sent Turkey through to the top flight of the UEFA Nations League for the first time in th
eir history. A 3-0 win on the night ensured a 6-1 aggregate victory over Hungary, who lost at home for the first time since 2006.
Leading 3-1 from the first leg, the visitors had to weather an early storm. Barnabas Varga could have put the Magyars ahead after just four minutes, but he shot wide from inside the six-yard box.
Soon after, Daniel Gazdag was denied by a fine save from Ugurcan Cakır, the goalkeeper coming off his line to narrow the angle before making a fine save with his left hand.
After Dominik Szoboszlai's long-range free-kick had struck the crossbar, Vincenzo Montella's men seized the momentum and struck a sledgehammer blow when Hakan Calhanoglu took the lead from the penalty spot after Attila Fiola's reckless challenge on Ismail Yuksek.
It was 2-0 minutes later when Real Madrid star Arda Guler struck from close range after being played in by Oguz Aydın.
With a four-goal deficit to overcome, the hosts had a mountain to climb, but their resistance was well and truly broken, as was the spirit of the home crowd. The Crescent Stars, on the other hand, were having the time of their lives, with captain Calhanoglu having a powerful shot saved from distance.
At the other end, Loic Nego had a sweet volley expertly palmed away, but it was a rare chance for Marco Rossi's side, who were enjoying plenty of possession but making little of it.
Even when they did get forward, they were wasteful, as Kevin Csoboth, caught in a double bind, proved when he was sent through on goal.
They failed to test Cakır again in the final half-hour, while the visitors added a third in the 90th minute when Abdulkerim Bardakcıbaris stooped to head home Barıs Alper Yılmaz's deep cross at the back post.
The result sees Hungary, who have now gone four games without a win for the first time since 2021, end their two-year spell in the Nations League top flight, while Turkey secured promotion to the competition with a fifth win in their last seven matches.
