In their final group stage match of the UEFA Nations League, Germany and Hungary played to a 1-1 draw.
Germany had already made sure of the top spot in the group and a place in the quarter-finals. They were on course for victory when Felix Nmecha put them in the lead, but Dominik Szoboszlai showed great composure to score a Panenka penalty in stoppage time, securing a draw.
Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai scored a fantastic Panenka penalty with the last kick of the game to earn his side a 1-1 draw against Germany in their UEFA Nations League match in Budapest.
Germany had already secured top spot in Group A3 before the game, with Hungary also confirmed as finishing third in the pool. This means that they will play in a relegation play-off fixture in the new year.
The game saw both teams trying out new partnerships and the visitors made nine changes. After a quiet first half, Germany took the lead in the 77th minute when Felix Nmecha scored from a rebound, netting his first international goal.
It looked like the Borussia Dortmund midfielder had won the game for Germany, but the referee gave a handball decision against Robin Koch in the final seconds of added time, which meant the game was decided by VAR.
Szoboszlai made the most of it, sending the ball over the head of the otherwise excellent Alexander Nubel to level the scores with the last kick of the match.
It was a frustrating night for Nagelsmann. Germany made a lot of changes because Julian Nagelsmann wanted to find some alternative options in his squad before this competition's knockout stage and the World Cup qualifiers.
But he'll be leaving Budapest with some frustration over his reserve team's lack of output. The team played some great football, but there were a few brief flashes of brilliance from Leroy Sané, Serge Gnabry and Julian Brandt. Once the more established starters were introduced, Germany looked much more dangerous.
The hosts could have picked up a big win if it hadn't been for goalkeeper Nubel, who made some great saves. One particularly impressive save was made by Nubel to deny Barnabas Varga when the score was still 0-0.
