Two first-half penalties and two great finishes in the second half helped the Netherlands beat Hungary 4-0 on Saturday. This means they'll be in the top two in Group A3 for the Nations League quarter-finals in March.
Wout Weghorst and Cody Gakpo both scored from the penalty spot, while Denzel Dumfries and Teun Koopmeiners, who was back in action after a spell out, added two more goals after the break.
There was a short delay in play at the Johan Cruyff Arena when Hungary's assistant coach had a seizure and was taken to hospital for treatment. It wasn't until the players discussed the situation on the pitch that Hungary agreed to continue playing.
But they had to face a penalty straight away after a VAR check showed that defender Tamas Nikitscher had handled the ball when he tried to clear Gakpo's cross just before the break.
Weghorst tapped the ball in to give the Netherlands the lead, and they were awarded a second penalty in stoppage time before half-time when Donyell Malen was tripped by Zsolt Nagy.
This time Gakpo took the penalty and, like Weghorst, he scored against Denes Dibusz.
The Hungarian goalkeeper made some great saves in the first half to keep the score at 2-0. He even managed to save Tijjani Reijnders' header off the crossbar.
But there was little he could do in the 64th minute as Dumfries volleyed the ball into the net from an angle after half-clearing it with no defence on the right side of the attack.
The Netherlands looked more fluid after influential midfielder Frenkie de Jong returned to the team for the first time in 13 months, having missed the Euros in Germany earlier this year with a long-term ankle injury.
Koopmeiners also made his first appearance since a groin injury he picked up before Euro 2024, and he celebrated his return with a superb header in the 85th minute.
The Netherlands moved up to eight points in the standings after Freiburg's 7-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, five points behind Germany's 13. But even so, the win ensured the Netherlands progressed to the quarter-finals of the Nations League and further matches in future tournaments.
