Italy 4-1 Israel
Retegui pen 41 (It), Di Lorenzo 54, 79 (It), Abu Fani 66 (Is), Frattesi 72 (It)
The Azzurri lost their perfect record with a 2-2 draw against Belgium when they were down to 10 men, so Lorenzo Pellegrini was suspended and Giacomo Raspadori, Guglielmo Vicario and Nicolò Fagioli stepped in to the starting XI. Israel were at the bottom of the table, but had scored in all three games. They were missing Manor Solomon, Omri Gandelman, Miguel Vitor, Shawn Goldberg, Eli Dasa and Roy Revivo. Dean David had asked to be left out, apparently over a row about playing time.
Oscar Gloukh had the first chance, but he couldn't get a shot away from the edge of the area after Fagioli messed up in midfield. Glazer came running off his line to stop Mateo Retegui scoring from a Giovanni Di Lorenzo pass.
Riccardo Calafiori found himself at the byline moments later, crossed for Raspadori, but it was cleared almost off the line.
Italy played a great team move with one-touch football from Alessandro Bastoni and Raspadori, resulting in the Retegui strike being saved by Glazer.
The goalkeeper also made a great save to stop Sandro Tonali from scoring from six yards after a Raspadori through ball.
Dimarco managed to control a long Raspadori pass and rolled it across the face of the goal, but unfortunately, both Davide Frattesi and Retegui failed to make the most of it as they came sliding in.
Gloukh made a mistake again from a promising position, but Tonali got to a poor clearance just inside the area before Dor Peretz and earned a penalty. Retegui set up Glazer with a stuttering run-up before sending it into the top corner for his second consecutive Italy game on target.
Italy made it 2-0 after the break when Raspadori floated a free kick into the box for his Napoli teammate Giovanni Di Lorenzo to head home from six yards. He was the captain this evening and marked his first goal since November 2022.
However, Israel once again demonstrated their ability to score in every single game in the Nations League, with Mohammad Abu Fani curling the ball in directly from the corner flag. Vicario said he was obstructed by Matan Baltaxa, but like we've seen several times playing for Tottenham this season, the referee and VAR decided it was fair pressure.
Italy almost made it 3-0 again soon after, but Glazer made a great save to keep out the looping header from Alessandro Bastoni.
The goal came when Calafiori spread the play down the left for Dimarco, who rolled across for his Inter teammate Frattesi to fire in first time.
Daniel Maldini made history as the first time one family represented Italy with three generations, following in the footsteps of his father Paolo – who was in the stands – and his grandfather Cesare.
The 23-year-old made an immediate impact, with a clever move that sent Destiny Udogie down the left, and then pulled back for Di Lorenzo to score his first brace for Italy.
