Iceland vs Wales

Match preview

Iceland have had a mixed start to the 2024-25 campaign. They drew all four of their 2022-23 Nations League matches, but have since lost 3-1 away to Turkey and won 2-0 at home to Montenegro.

Age Hareide's team have been up and down in 2024. They've won and lost in each of their last six internationals, scoring eight goals and conceding 10 in the process.

Iceland are currently ranked 71st in the world by FIFA. They're aiming to finish top of League B and secure promotion back to League A, where they suffered 10 defeats in 10 games across two separate campaigns.

Next Monday, they're playing Turkey at home, but first they have to get through Friday's game against Wales. They've only beaten Wales once in the last six meetings, and that was way back in September 1984 in a World Cup qualifier, when they won 1-0.

Wales beat Iceland 3-1 in a friendly match at home in March 2014. They've also had an unbeaten start to their Nations League campaign.

The Dragons had a tough start to the tournament, drawing 0-0 with Turkey in their opening match. However, they bounced back with a 2-1 victory against Montenegro, thanks to two quick goals from Kieffer Moore and Harry Wilson.

Bellamy's first win ended a run of four internationals without a victory for Wales, while it also represented just the second triumph that the Dragons have recorded on the road in their last 11 matches across all competitions.

If Wales beat Iceland on Friday, they'll climb to the top of Group B. It'll be the first time they've beaten Iceland away from home since 1980. Plus, if Turkey drops points at home to Montenegro, it'll help.
