Germany's dream of lifting the trophy on home soil came to an end in the quarter-finals of this summer's European Championship, as Julian Nagelsmann's side were knocked out by eventual winners Spain in Stuttgart.

Having reached the final after a tumultuous year that saw Hansi Flick replaced by another former Bayern Munich boss, Germany were not necessarily expected to go further, so Nagelsmann remains in the hot seat.

He will now usher in a new era for the national team, with senior players such as Manuel Neuer, Ilkay Gundogan, Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos all retiring from international football after several years.

As a result, Nagelsmann's first Nations League campaign will feature a number of fresh faces as he looks to qualify for the 2026 World Cup and then win back the title.

The 37-year-old has won seven and lost three of his first 13 games in charge, including a 2-0 win over this week's Euro opponents to top Group A.

Germany also faced Hungary in the Nations League last time out, but they fared less well in their two matches in League A in 2022-23, losing at home and picking up a point away.

Hungary still lead the overall head-to-head record with 12 wins to Germany's 14 - and a dozen draws - with their most famous defeat coming in the 1954 World Cup final, when all-time great Ferenc Puskas narrowly missed out on glory in a controversial penalty shoot-out.

More recently, Marco Rossi's current squad only missed out on a place in the knockout stages of Euro 2024 on goal difference, taking three points from as many games in Group A.

The victory over Scotland ended an eight-match winless streak at the European Championship, but the Magyars have won just two of their last 18 matches against other European nations at major tournaments.

Heading into the Euros, Hungary had lost just once in 16 matches, helping them to push Italy to the brink of the Nations League final before finishing a point behind in a group that also included Germany and England.

Rossi, who was appointed in 2018, remains in charge for the challenge ahead as his side look to beat the Netherlands and Bosnia-Herzegovina to finish in the top two of Group 3, which would be good enough to reach the new quarter-final stage.
