Villarreal will face troubled Sevilla on Sunday afternoon, looking to end an excellent season on a positive note. The Yellow Submarine has secured fifth place in La Liga and a spot in the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League, while Sevilla has endured another disappointing season and could end up in 17th place.
Villarreal has been in great form in La Liga this season, scoring 67 goals in 37 games, the third best offensive record in La Liga behind only Barcelona and Real Madrid. The Yellow Submarine has won 19, drawn 10 and lost 8 in 37 league games this season, ranking fifth with 67 points and has secured a spot in the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League. Marcelino's side can tie with fourth-placed Athletic Bilbao on 70 points, but they will still finish fifth as the Basque side have the upper hand in the head-to-head meetings between the two teams this season.
Villarreal have won five straight games in the Spanish top flight, including a 3-2 win over champions Barcelona last time out, so they will be looking to make it six straight wins on Sunday afternoon. The Yellow Submarine last played in the Champions League in the 2021-22 season, where they made it all the way to the semi-finals before losing 5-2 on aggregate to Liverpool.
Meanwhile, Sevilla finished 14th in La Liga last season, the team's lowest position since being relegated in 2000. Things have been even worse for the struggling team this season, currently sitting in 16th place, just two points above 17th-placed Espanyol, so a spot outside the relegation zone could be their last spot in the table. That being said, Los Nebiones will still finish 13th if they beat Villarreal and other results go in their favour.
Joaquin Caparros’ side won their last home game against also-struggling Las Palmas 1-0 on May 13, but this match came after a 2-0 home defeat to Real Madrid. Sevilla has only four wins in 18 away league games in the 2024-25 campaign, having been beaten in their last two games against Villarreal, including a 2-1 loss at the Ramon Stadium earlier this season.
Villarreal predicted starting lineup:
Luis Junior; Navarro, Foyth, L Costa, S Cardona; Pepe, Comesana, Parejo, Buchanan; Barry Baena
Sevilla predicted starting lineup:
Nylan; Curru, Macao, Salas, Carmona; Lukebakio, Gudelji, Agoume, Sof; Suso, Garcia
