Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane scored in each half to lead his team to a 3-0 win over 10-man Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday.

It was Bayern's first win over Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen in their last seven games and gives them a huge advantage going into next week's return leg, while the visitors, second in the league behind the Bavarians, endured a bitterly disappointing evening, riddled with errors and sloppy defending in their worst performance of the season.

The Bundesliga leaders, who were knocked out of the German Cup by Leverkusen, came out firing and took the lead in the ninth minute through Kane's powerful header.

Kane's goal ended a run of four games without a goal for the England striker, who last netted for Bayern against Celtic on 2 February.

After a pulsating start, the visitors almost hit back five minutes later when Jeremie Frimpong, alone in front of goal, failed to beat Manuel Neuer, who was making his 150th Champions League appearance, from close range.

Bayern were in control and came close to adding a second when Jamal Musiala headed against the crossbar.

Error-prone Leverkusen, with top strikers Victor Boniface and Patrick Schick on the bench, were a shadow of the side that dominated Bayern in a goalless league draw just over two weeks ago.

Leverkusen goalkeeper Matej Kovar conceded a second in the 54th minute, dropping the ball to Joshua Kimmich's cross and allowing Jamal Musiala to tap in.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors when Nordi Mukiele was sent off for a second bookable offence and Kane sealed Bayern's comfortable victory with a well-taken 75th-minute penalty and his 31st goal in all competitions.

The only sour note on an otherwise perfect night for Bayern came in the 58th minute when Neuer was forced off with an injury.

The winner of Tuesday's return leg will meet either Feyenoord or Inter Milan in the last eight.
