Goals from Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez earned Inter a 2-0 win at Feyenoord in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday.

Feyenoord looked the more dangerous side in the first half, but Inter took the lead against the run of play when Thuram scored with an acrobatic volley in the 38th minute and Martinez found the top corner shortly after the break.

The return leg will be played in Milan on Tuesday, with the winners meeting Bayern Munich or Bayer Leverkusen for a place in the semi-finals.

Inter dominated possession in the early stages, but the home side launched effective counter-attacks, with Ibrahim Osman's low shot at the near post forcing an early save from Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez.

The Serie A leaders often lacked precision, but Thuram finished off a great team move to put them ahead after the French striker latched onto Nicolò Barella's long cross and fired home from close range.

The goal lifted Inter and they doubled their lead five minutes into the second half when Martinez scored his sixth goal of the season.

It was the Argentine's 18th Champions League goal for Inter, making him the club's all-time leading scorer in the competition.

Jakub Moder hit the crossbar for the hosts, but Inter could have made it 3-0 when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Thuram just after the hour mark.

However, Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther read Piotr Zielinski's intentions and saved the Polish midfielder's low shot.

The result dented Feyenoord's chances of reaching the quarter-finals of Europe's premier club competition for the first time since 1971-72, as new coach Robin van Persie made his Champions League debut.

Inter, European champions on three occasions, most recently in 2010, progressed directly to the knockout stages after finishing fourth in the competition's inaugural league phase.
