Liverpool substitute Harvey Elliott scored a last-gasp winner 47 seconds after coming on as Paris Saint-Germain held on for a 1-0 victory in their Champions League last-16 first leg on Wednesday.

Luis Enrique's PSG, who had won 18 and drawn two of their previous 20 games, were left to rue missed opportunities as they prepare for a tough return leg at Anfield next Tuesday.

The hosts had the first clear chance in the 16th minute when João Neves fired over the bar from Ousmane Dembele's cutback after the France international had beaten two defenders.

Alarm bells were ringing for Liverpool and they escaped punishment again in the 20th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's superb curling effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Bradley Barcola went down under a challenge from Ibrahima Konaté, prompting another video review for a possible red card, but the visitors were reduced to 11 men.

With Liverpool in survival mode, Alisson made a fine save from Neves' 25-yard shot before denying Dembélé. The ball fell into the path of Barcola, whose first shot was blocked before his second flew over.

Kvaratskhelia was again denied by the firm hand of the Brazilian keeper, who continued to make saves left, right and centre in a one-sided second half. "I don't know where we'd be without him," said Elliott.

Slot sent on Curtis Jones and Núñez for Luis Díaz and Diogo Jota in the hope of turning things around, but PSG remained a step ahead.

Alisson was again called into action 10 minutes from time to tip over Désiré Doué's shot, and he also played a key role in the build-up to the goal.

With the clock ticking down, Núñez latched onto Alisson's long ball and played it perfectly into the path of Elliott, who calmly slotted the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

"You could see they [PSG] had become a bit tired at the end," added Elliott. "It was down to me to put the opportunity away and fortunately it went in."

Alisson, who was named man of the match, said it was the performance of his life. "We had to be ready to suffer ... It was a tough night for us with a happy end," he said.He made PSG's 28 shots come to naught.

"We worked hard. We gave away so many chances ... And then at the end Harvey coming in and scoring the goal. It's unbelievable. A great story. A great night for us."
