Harry Maguire's second-half header gave 10-man Manchester United a 3-2 win over Ipswich Town on Wednesday, a vital victory that lifted Ruben Amorim's struggling side out of the Premier League relegation zone.

Amorim has endured a miserable time at the club since taking over in November, particularly at home, and there was more pain to come at Old Trafford after poor defending allowed Jaden Philogene to open the scoring for Ipswich.

However, United responded well to turn the game on its head as an own goal from Ipswich captain Sam Morsy and a close-range finish from Matthijs de Ligt put the hosts ahead after 26 minutes.

The game swung again when United defender Patrick Dorgu was sent off two minutes before the break for a late challenge on Omari Hutchinson, and the 10-man side almost immediately conceded, with Philogene again the Ipswich goalscorer.

With the visitors having the whole of the second half to make their numerical advantage count, it was Maguire who broke the deadlock shortly after the break to give United a win that lifts them to 14th in the table, 16 points clear of 18th-placed Ipswich.

Amorim is well aware that United's biggest need for improvement is at home, and he openly admits that his players feel the pressure more on their own turf.

Diogo Dalot and Matthijs de Ligt celebrate the latter's goal v Ipswich.

Going into Wednesday's clash with Ipswich, almost 30 years on from United's famous 9-0 thrashing of the same opponents, the hosts had lost five of their previous seven home league games.

United battled hard in the second half and the final whistle was greeted with a huge sigh of relief from the home fans, who had secured a first home win in four league games to ensure they would not be dragged into a relegation battle.
