Erling Haaland is set for a spell on the sidelines after sustaining an ankle injury in Manchester City’s FA quarter-final win over Bournemouth, and could miss the remainder of the Premier League season.
The Norway international went down awkwardly under a tackle from Lewis Cook shortly after scoring City’s equaliser. He received treatment and attempted to play on, but quickly signaled to the bench that he could not continue and was replaced by Omar Marmoush.
The Egyptian winger, signed from Eintracht Frankfurt in January, would go on to score the winner as City progressed to the semi-finals, where they will face Nottingham Forest.
Speaking after the match, City manager Pep Guardiola told the press that it was too soon to know the severity of the injury. Haaland was seen leaving the stadium on crutches with his left foot in a protective boot.
But Manchester City have now revealed that Haaland is expected to return “in time to play a further part in the remainder of this season” and is expected to be fit for this summer’s new-look FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, which kicks off on June 14. City’s first match in the tournament takes place on June 18, facing AC Wydad in Philadelphia.
In a statement released Monday evening, the club confirmed Haaland had undergone tests on the ankle in Manchester on Monday and is set to see a specialist to understand the full extent of the injury.
Guardiola issued a further update on Tuesday afternoon, adding: "The doctors told me between five and seven weeks, so hopefully at the end of the season and World Cup he will be ready."
