Tottenham Hotspur came out on top in Wednesday's Carabao Cup match against Manchester City, with a 2-1 victory in North London. This marks the first loss for Pep Guardiola's team this season.
The win means Tottenham are through to the quarter-finals of the competition and there's still a chance that their boss, Ange Postecoglou, will win a trophy in his second season as coach of the club after a great attacking display.
City made seven changes to the side that beat Southampton 1-0 at the weekend, including Erling Haaland who didn't play at all. Spurs quickly applied their press and found some early gaps in City's defence.
Dejan Kulusevski passed to Timo Werner in the box, and the German striker scored his first goal of the season.Pape Matar Sarr got the second goal in the 25th minute. The ball got to him outside the penalty area after a well-worked corner, and the Senegal midfielder curled it brilliantly inside the right-hand post.
City managed to pull one back in the last few seconds of the first half. Matheus Nunes connected with a cross from Savinho and scored with their first effort on target.
Guardiola said he wanted his side to perform well with no injuries, but unfortunately Savinho picked up a knock that saw him stretchered off in the 62nd minute. It was a shame because he was already missing key players this season.
Guardiola said they'll find out on Thursday how bad the injury is to the Brazil winger. City also lost Manuel Akanji in the warm-up. He'd been a doubt for the game because of a knee issue.
Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish, Kyle Walker, Jérémy Doku and Oscar Bobb were already on the injury list, while Guardiola said Rúben Dias has been playing through a problem.
That took the wind out of City's sails a bit, but Nico O'Reilly almost got a late equaliser, only for substitute Yves Bissouma to clear the ball off the line as Spurs hung on for a 2-1 victory.
