Alan Shearer claims there is 'no doubt' Erling Haaland will break his Premier League goals record, after he signed a new 10-year deal at Man City.
An astonishing new nine-and-a-half year deal was announced for Haaland on Friday, with the striker committing to City's long-term future despite a disappointing first half of the campaign during which their chances of defending the Premier League title have all but evaporated. Shearer believes that his 260-goal tally is bound to be surpassed should Haaland - who has scored 79 goals in 87 league matches for City - see out that contract.
Striker-turned-pundit Shearer has seen his record come under pressure from various players over the years, with Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane both tipped to pass it before falling short - though second-place Kane is 47 goals short and could still mount a challenge should he return to the division. Haaland looks more capable of reaching 260, but the Norwegian would need roughly five more seasons of scoring at his current rate to go close to the record.
Shearer told BBC Sport: "If he stays for that long, no doubt he will break that record. My record will go one day. It might be somebody else's by then - like Harry Kane or Mohamed Salah. There were great goalscorers before I was born that have incredible records as well. My record will go one day, I'm sure of that."
It has been speculated that Haaland has signed this contract in the knowledge that City will avoid serious sanctions from the Premier League when the verdict from their charges for alleged financial misdemeanours is revealed. Either way, it is a huge boost for the club's long-term future that the striker - who it was previously believed may push for a move into Europe while he was still in his peak - is staying at the Etihad.
