Sheffield Wednesday return to Hillsborough on Saturday looking to end a five-match winless streak in the Championship, having failed to build on a stunning 4-0 opening day thrashing of Plymouth Argyle in Danny Rohl's first full season in charge.

Indeed, the Owls have picked up just one point from their last five outings, as their perfect start was followed by consecutive defeats at Sunderland, Leeds United and Millwall before the September international break.

The first draw came in agonising fashion at home to Queens Park Rangers, with the visitors going 1-0 up in stoppage time through Barry Bannan, only for Alfie Lloyd to equalise in the 96th minute.

Rohl's men, who progressed to the fourth round of the EFL Cup with a 1-0 win away at Blackpool, then visited Luton Town on Saturday and, after again going ahead through Bannan, were left empty-handed when Carlton Morris converted a penalty 13 minutes from time to give the hosts all three points.

Sheffield Wednesday's poor run of form has seen them drop into the bottom three of the English second tier, and they will be desperate to pick up their second win of the season on Saturday to begin their climb up the division.

However, they face another tricky test as the visitors arrive in South Yorkshire on the back of a near-perfect start to their promotion push this term.

After finishing fifth in the Championship and losing out in the play-off semi-finals last season, West Bromwich Albion are top of the table after six games of the 2024-25 campaign, having gone unbeaten and amassed 16 points.

The only point they dropped came in a goalless stalemate at Leeds United in mid-August, and Carlos Corberan's side have since bounced back in style, first beating Stoke City and Swansea City before the international break.

The Baggies have since turned those results into a four-match winning streak in the second tier of English football, beating Portsmouth 3-0 on their travels and most recently hosting Plymouth Argyle on Saturday, when Josh Maja netted the only goal of the game just after the hour mark.

With momentum building at the Hawthorns, West Bromwich Albion have scored 10 goals and conceded just two in their six games so far and will be looking to consolidate their position at the top of the table with a fifth successive win on Saturday.

Sheffield Wednesday will be without defender Di'Shon Bernard, who is serving a suspension after being sent off in the defeat at Luton Town, while Dominic Iorfa and Nathaniel Chalobah remain in the treatment room and Djeidi Gassama is a fresh injury concern.

In Bernard's absence, Michael Ihiekwe is likely to join Liam Palmer and Akin Famewo in a back three, while midfielder Svante Ingelsson may be forced to settle for a place on the bench again, with Shea Charles preferred alongside captain Barry Bannan, who has scored in each of the last two games.

Danny Rohl may decide to shuffle his attacking pack after Olaf Kobacki and Josh Windass supported Michael Smith against Luton Town, with Jamal Lowe, Ike Ugbo and Anthony Musaba all fighting for a place in the starting line-up.

Carlos Corberan could name an unchanged West Brom starting XI from last week's win over Plymouth Argyle, with midfielder Jayson Molumby and striker Daryl Dike still sidelined through injury.

Josh Maja, who tops the league scoring charts with six goals in six appearances so far this season, will again lead the line.

Despite competition from the likes of Jed Wallace, Grady Diangana, Mikey Johnston and Lewis Dobbin, Maja could again be supported by the trio of Karlan Grant, John Swift and Tom Fellows, who has four assists in six Championship games this term, while Uros Racic and Alex Mowatt should continue their partnership in the engine room.

Sheffield Wednesday possible starting lineup:

Beadle; Palmer, Ihiekwe, Famewo; Valery, Charles, Bannan, Johnson; Musaba, Ugbo, Windass

West Bromwich Albion possible starting lineup:

Palmer; Furlong, Ajayi, Bartley, Heggem; Racic, Mowatt; Fellows, Swift, Grant; Maja

Prediction:Sheffield Wednesday 0-2 West Bromwich Albion
