Goals for CF Monterrey: Deossa (30'), Berterame (34', 90+7'), Corona (39')
CF Monterrey netted three goals in just nine minutes, two of which were spectacular, to defeat Urawa Red Diamonds and secure a last-16 matchup with Borussia Dortmund in Atlanta.
The Mexican team fired the first warning in the third minute when Alfonso Alvarado headed a looping cross off the crossbar. For the next 25 minutes, the game was evenly balanced, with both sides creating half-chances but failing to convert.
In the 30th minute, the match erupted dramatically. Nelson Deossa collected the ball just inside the attacking half and unleashed a stunning 30-meter strike past Shusaku Nishikawa, the ball swerving and dipping to deceive the goalkeeper.
Urawa Reds were caught off guard again after a cooling break following the first goal. Rayados doubled their lead as German Berterame calmly side-footed the ball into the far corner, assisted by Jesus Corona inside the box.
Soon after, Monterrey extended their advantage further. From about 25 meters out, Jesus Corona fired a powerful right-footed shot that left the Urawa Reds goalkeeper helpless.
The second half started as the first had ended. Rayados broke from their own half with a four-on-one opportunity, but the Mexicans squandered the chance this time.
As the game continued, a comeback seemed impossible. In the final moments, Berterame scored his second goal, sealing Monterrey's fourth.
Despite the loss, Japanese fans kept singing and cheering throughout the full 90 minutes.
