The goal came too late to change the outcome.
Atletico Madrid dominated Botafogo in Pasadena, California, with 23 shots and five big chances, achieving an xG (expected goals) of 3.03. However, they didn't score until Antoine Griezmann, who entered at halftime, finished Julián Alvarez's cross past goalkeeper John Victor in the 87th minute.
On the touchline, coach Diego Simeone motivated his team for one final push, but even another goal wouldn't suffice.
At Lumen Field, Paris Saint-Germain led Seattle Sounders 2-0, leaving PSG, Botafogo, and Atletico tied on six points. Group B's fate hinged on goal difference, and Atletico needed two more goals to advance.
When the fourth official indicated six minutes of added time, Atletico fans in the Rose Bowl cheered briefly, but it was their last moment of hope. At the final whistle, Botafogo's supporters—gathered behind one goal in the only packed section of the vast stadium—celebrated in their black-and-white jerseys.
Credit to Botafogo for their solid defense. Atletico believed they were denied key decisions, including two penalty appeals, but ultimately, Botafogo—a team known for overachieving after winning the 2024 Copa Libertadores and upsetting PSG earlier—advanced to the last 16.
Atletico may feel unfortunate to be eliminated, and with good reason. They won two of their three matches in a challenging group against the reigning champions of Europe and South America, plus a home-strong Seattle Sounders side. This raises questions about Atletico's choice not to bolster their squad following a disappointing end to their LaLiga season.
"I want to congratulate the opponents," Simeone said afterward. "Botafogo played exceptionally well, with courage and integrity: they defended effectively, and strong defense combined with good attacks increases winning chances."
Ultimately, Atletico's efforts fell short. Their 4-0 opening loss to PSG, coupled with Botafogo's unexpected victory over the same team, sealed their fate. The players seemed to take the exit in stride—Griezmann was seen smiling while chatting with Botafogo's players and staff after the game—but for Botafogo, this milestone is significant.
"Brazil is a vast country with exceptional football and talented players," coach Renato Paiva remarked. "We have excellent coaches here. We're all contributing to showcase Brazil's true strength. Many underestimate us, but we're proud to represent our nation and club." Now, they get to do so in the last 16.
