Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has announced he will not play for the Poland national team as long as coach Michał Probierz remains in charge.

The 36-year-old cited "physical and mental tiredness" at the end of a demanding season with Barcelona as the reason for stepping away during the current international window.

Consequently, Probierz replaced Lewandowski as Poland captain, appointing Inter Milan's Piotr Zieliński to the role.

Lewandowski has since declared a temporary withdrawal from international football, though he has not ruled out a potential return.

"Considering the circumstances and a loss of trust in the coach, I have chosen to step away from the Poland national team while he is in charge," the experienced forward stated on social media.

"I hope to have the opportunity to play again for the world's best fans."

Lewandowski missed crucial matches late in the club season due to a hamstring injury, including the Champions League semifinal against Inter and the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid.

He made a comeback for the final three games, scoring twice as Barcelona secured LaLiga, but decided against joining Poland for a friendly against Moldova and a World Cup qualifier against Finland this month.

"After recovering from injury, I informed Coach Probierz that I was not feeling well physically, and especially mentally," Lewandowski shared with Polish media earlier this week.

Lewandowski holds the record for the most caps (158) and goals (85) in Polish national team history.

Poland has won their first two qualifiers in Group G ahead of Tuesday's match against Finland, as they aim to qualify for the World Cup in North America next year.

Probierz has led the team since 2023, replacing Fernando Santos after a successful interim role with Poland's U21 team.

Under his guidance, Poland qualified for Euro 2024 last summer, but they were eliminated in the group stage without a single win.
