Carlo Ancelotti experienced a disappointing debut as Brazil's coach in Thursday's South American World Cup qualifiers, resulting in a 0-0 draw against second-placed Ecuador, which heaps pressure on the Italian manager.
Brazil struggled to penetrate Ecuador's well-organized defense and generated few opportunities in the first half. The most notable chance came from Vinícius Júnior, who was set up by Gerson, but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Gonzalo Valle.
Ecuador posed a threat in the second half when John Yeboah attempted a through ball, but striker Nilson Angulo was caught offside.
Ancelotti's team created several chances but failed to convert them. Richarlison missed a golden opportunity from a precise pass by Vinicius Jr. inside the box, and Casemiro's fierce long-range effort was stopped by Valle.
This result leaves Ecuador in second place with 24 points, bringing them closer to qualification. The top six teams qualify directly for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Ecuador will face ninth-placed Peru on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Brazil remains in fourth place with 22 points and will next play third-placed Paraguay, who secured a 2-0 win over Uruguay.
