Paul Skenes has emerged as one of baseball's brightest stars, a right-handed pitcher who has become a genuine superstar for the Pittsburgh Pirates, a team in dire need of a top ace.

However, the Pirates might consider the potential trade value of Skenes.

As Ken Rosenthal wrote for The Athletic: "Trade Paul Skenes? The Pittsburgh Pirates should build around Paul Skenes. Still, the idea is fascinating, and for a team so far from contention, perfectly rational, given the injury risks for any pitcher. But such a deal would require the Pirates to show three qualities they rarely display—nerve, creativity, and savvy."

Rosenthal drew a parallel, comparing it to the Washington Nationals' trade of Juan Soto.

"In 2022, Juan Soto, under club control for three pennant races, along with Josh Bell, fetched a massive return from the San Diego Padres: players like James Wood, MacKenzie Gore, CJ Abrams, Robert Hassell III, Jarlin Susana, and Luke Voit."

"Skenes is under control for five pennant races. To make the trade worthwhile, the Pirates would need a package that surpasses the Soto deal significantly. Even if teams are eager to trade their prospects for Skenes, few might have enough talent to meet the price."
