Atletico Madrid will travel to Girona on Sunday afternoon, aiming to end the 2024-25 season on a positive note. Regardless of the final result of the game, the capital giants will be ranked third in the La Liga standings, but Girona still has the potential to rise. They are currently 15th in La Liga with 41 points from 37 games.

Girona performed very well last season and finished third in La Liga. It will be very difficult to repeat this result this season. It will be a test for the club. They are currently ranked 15th in La Liga. Michel's team was once in relegation trouble, but they finally stayed in La Liga and led Leganes, who are ranked 18th, by 4 points with one game left in the league, so their La Liga spot for next season is already confirmed. The Catalan side come into this match on the back of a 3-2 defeat to Real Sociedad, their 18th league defeat of the season, with only the bottom two teams – Las Palmas and Real Valladolid – having suffered more defeats in the Spanish top flight this term.

Meanwhile, Girona have lost eight of their 18 home league games this season, while Atletico’s away form has been far from stellar, dropping points in 11 of their 18 La Liga away games at the Wanda Metropolitano. In fact, the Red and Whites beat Atletico 4-3 in last season’s meeting, but lost 0-3 when the two teams met at the Wanda Metropolitano in August this year.

Atletico have been in excellent form at home recently, winning all four of their last four La Liga games and scoring 15 goals, but they have won just one of their last six away games and lost two of their last three away games. Diego Simeone's side will come into this match on the back of a 4-1 home win over Real Betis, but they had nothing substantial to fight for in their last match, as they have already secured third place in the standings. Athletic Bilbao, in fourth place, are level on 73 points with Atletico Madrid, but the Red and Whites have the better head-to-head record, having beaten the Basque side in both league meetings during the 2024-25 season. Atletico have failed to win La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League this season, but they will be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming Club World Cup, where they will face Paris Saint-Germain in mid-June.

Meanwhile, it is expected to be a very interesting summer transfer window for the club, as Simeone's side are planning some important signings in the hope of getting closer to Barcelona and Real Madrid next season.

Girona predicted starting lineup:

Krapivtsov; Martinez, Francis, Krejci, Blind; Herrera, Solis; Tsygankov, Martin, Asprilla; Porto

Atletico Madrid predicted starting lineup:

Oblak; Llorente, Le Normand, Lenglet, Galan; Simeone, De Paul, Koke, Gallagher; Alvarez, Solothurn
