A wave of panic swept through the Voith Arena on Friday at the start of the second half of a crucial Bundesliga survival match between Heidenheim and Bochum (0-0). Coming out of his goal to intercept a cross, FCH goalkeeper Kevin Müller was hit head-on by Ibrahima Sissoko, the visiting midfielder, who was trying to play the ball.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper collapsed on the pitch, unconscious, his face covered in blood. While his teammate Tim Siersleben had the good sense to administer first aid by removing his tongue from his throat and placing him in the recovery position, Bochum left-back Maximilian Wittek rushed to bring the first aid kit. Called to the rescue, the medical staff were fortunately able to intervene in time.

The scene that followed was not at all reassuring, and made the public understand the extent of the shock, as emergency services deployed tarpaulins and blankets to camouflage the scene and protect Müller's privacy. The match obviously ended in a strange atmosphere, after more than ten minutes of interruption. Replaced by his understudy Frank Feller, Müller regained consciousness but still suffered a concussion, according to a statement from FC Heidenheim published this Saturday.

"FCH goalkeeper Kevin Müller suffered a concussion during the Bundesliga match against VfL Bochum. This is the result of tests carried out late Friday evening at the Heidenheim hospital. (...) It is not yet known how long Kevin Müller will be out. FC Heidenheim would like to take this opportunity to expressly thank the medical staff present yesterday at the Voith Arena as well as the staff at the Heidenheim hospital for their care and treatment," said the currently 16th-placed Bundesliga side.
