Needing just a point to secure the Premier League title in front of their enthusiastic Merseyside fans on Sunday afternoon, Liverpool proved far too dominant for a struggling Tottenham side, which suffered its third consecutive domestic defeat in disappointing fashion.
Tottenham briefly sparked hope with a four-minute lead after star signing Dominic Solanke scored a surprising opening goal for the visitors at Anfield, but Arne Slot's formidable Liverpool machine quickly regained control, ultimately winning 5-1 and clinching their 20th English championship.
With only four matches left in a disappointing Premier League season, Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham squad sits in 16th place, on track for their worst-ever campaign in the league, though they are safely clear of relegation thanks to the struggles of the newly promoted teams.
Having won titles in his second seasons at Brisbane Roar, Yokohama F Marinos, and Celtic, the 59-year-old Postecoglou now has a golden chance to add another trophy to his record, potentially ending Tottenham's 17-year drought for major silverware despite their inconsistent domestic performance.
Although Tottenham has faced challenges in the Premier League, they have shone in this season's Europa League, delivering a thrilling performance at Deutsche Bank Park on April 17, where Solanke's penalty secured a narrow victory over 2021-22 champions Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals.
As an unexpected contender in the final four of this season's Europa League, Bodo/Glimt has been disrupting the Scandinavian football landscape since their first Eliteserien title in 2020, making it no great surprise that Kjetil Knutsen's team became the first Norwegian club to reach the semi-finals of a major UEFA men's competition.
The Norwegian champions have claimed back-to-back domestic titles in 2023 and 2024, entering the 2025 season as favorites to retain the crown, having started their Eliteserien campaign unbeaten with three wins and one draw in their first four matches.
Bodo/Glimt had an ideal preparation for Thursday's high-stakes trip to Tottenham's stadium, securing a convincing 3-0 victory over KFUM Oslo on Sunday, thanks to a brace from Kasper Waarts Hogh and a late goal from Ulrik Saltnes.
The Danish forward Hogh, who scored a brilliant brace as a substitute over the weekend, leads Bodo/Glimt's attack in the Europa League with seven goals in 12 appearances, tying him for the top spot in the competition's Golden Boot race alongside Olympiacos' Ayoub El Kaabi.
Heading into Thursday's semi-final first leg, Bodo/Glimt has lost all three previous encounters with English teams, though Knutsen's side put up a strong fight during their last visit to the British Isles in November, taking a surprise lead at Manchester United before falling 3-2.
Tottenham Hotspur possible starting lineup:
Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bergvall, Bentancur, Maddison; Kulusevski, Solanke, Tel
Bodo/Glimt possible starting lineup:
Haikin; Sjovold, Nielsen, Gundersen, Bjork; Fet, Auklend, Saltnes; Blomberg, Hauge, Hogh
