Real Madrid suffered another damaging defeat in the Champions League on Wednesday night as they struggled to get the better of Arsenal over two legs. To add insult to injury, they could be without top scorer Kylian Mbappé for the next few weeks after the Frenchman went off injured with 18 minutes remaining.
Kylian Mbappé, 26, has been the most consistent of their attacking quartets this season, even if he has not reached the heights many expected him to. The France forward is their top scorer with 32 goals in 49 appearances this term, to go with four assists.
The early diagnosis of the injury that forced him off is a twisted ankle, according to Diario AS. However, Real Madrid are optimistic about the outcome of the injury, which they describe as "light", and in theory will not jeopardise his participation in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, which takes place in Seville in nine days' time. However, the medical department will need more time to complete the diagnosis as they wait for the swelling to subside, and Mbappé will undergo further tests to understand the full implications of the injury.
Their superstar forward is already suspended for Real Madrid's home game against Athletic Club this weekend, following his red card against Alaves. A one-match ban would theoretically see Mbappé available for the trip to Getafe next Wednesday, although Carlo Ancelotti may decide not to risk him.
Los Blancos have only missed him on four occasions this season, twice through injury and twice as a result of rest. Real Madrid have drawn 1-1 and 3-3 with Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano respectively in La Liga, but have beaten Leganes 3-2 and Real Sociedad 1-0 in the Copa del Rey. Ancelotti will want to see his star man in full flight against Barcelona on 26 April.
