Real Madrid were heavy favourites heading into the second leg of their Champions League tie against Manchester City. Los Blancos had a 3-2 lead from the first leg and the advantage stretched to three goals after a first half brace from Kylian Mbappé.
The Frenchman struck after just four minutes, latching onto a long ball forward and lifted his shot over Ederson. Half an hour later he doubled his tally with a clinical finish to cap a scintillating Madrid move. Midway through the second half he notched a third to complete a sensational Champions League hattrick.
Those three goals take Mbappé to 28 in 38 appearances for Real Madrid, a healthy return in his first season in Spain. For club and country, Mbappé‘s goal tally now stands at an incredible 359, with a further 142 assists credited to the Frenchman.
Mbappe has been involved in 501 goals across all competitions and only turned 26 last December. He is the youngest player to reach the milestone of 500 goal contributions at the top level.
Having lifted countless domestic trophies with Paris Saint-Germain and won the World Cup with France, a Champions League triumph is the only glaring omission from Mbappé‘s sporting CV.
The move to Madrid was tipped to help Mbappé add that missing piece to his heavy trophy cabinet. Real Madrid have won six of the last 11 editions of the Champions League and looked well-placed to challenge again this year. The 70th season of the elite continental soccer competition could prove a milestone for Mbappé.
