An early goal from Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison was enough for his side to end a barren run in the Premier League by beating fellow strugglers Manchester United 1-0 in an entertaining encounter on Sunday.

Maddison, back in the starting line-up after injury, tapped in a rebound from close range after 13 minutes to settle a contest in which both sides showed their frailties.

Tottenham's first home win in 105 days eased the pressure on Australian manager Ange Postecoglou as his side moved above United into 12th place on 30 points.

United manager Ruben Amorim's difficult start to life at Old Trafford continues, however, with the Portuguese having now lost eight of his 14 Premier League games in charge.

His side slipped to 15th on 29 points as they became the first United side to lose the league double to Spurs since the 1989-90 season.

"I am not worried. I understand our fans, what the media think about it. I hate to lose, that feeling is the worst," Amorim said. "I am confident in my work. The place in the table is my worry, I am not worried about me."

James Maddison scored the only goal of the game as Tottenham added to Man United's misery, while Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Vicario, returning from injury, was another hero of the team. His saves and blocks helped the team keep consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League for the first time in 16 months.
