The left-back position has proven to be a weak link for United during the 2024-25 season.
Players like Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, and Tyrell Malacia have been all over the place lately, so Ruben Amorim has been asking for new players to come in. Luke Shaw is almost ready to come back from another muscle injury, but he keeps getting injured, so the club really needs a reliable alternative.
According to The Independent, Paris Saint-Germain's Mendes is United's top priority because he's worked with Amorim before.
But the money involved has made it tricky.PSG want €60 million for the player and he wants a lot of money, so it looks like the transfer won't happen.United need to sell players to get money for Mendes, but PSG also want to keep the Portuguese international.
So now United are looking at other, more realistic, options.Ait-Nouri has been a standout performer for Wolves and has also shown he can play other positions, like left-back and wing-back. The Algerian's contract is set to expire next summer, but the club can extend it by another year, which would tie him down until the end of the 2026-27 season.
His ability to adapt to different tactics has reportedly caught the eye of Amorim, who values such flexibility. The Algerian international has scored four goals and provided five assists across 22 appearances in all competitions this season, with three goals and five assists in the Premier League.
United are keen to sign Ait-Nouri, and the deal could go through in January, but it depends on the future of Tyrell Malacia. The Dutch defender has been struggling to make an impact at Old Trafford and is rumoured to be on the radar of Juventus and Borussia Dortmund. If they go for Malacia, it could create the financial and squad space needed to sign Ait-Nouri.
