US men's national team midfielder Malik Tillman has suffered an ankle injury, PSV announced on Saturday. Manager Peter Bosz confirmed that Tillman could be out for a "long time", but the severity of the injury is yet to be determined.
The injury reportedly occurred after he scored a 73rd-minute goal in PSV's midweek Dutch Cup match against Excelsior to spark a thrilling extra-time comeback victory. He crashed to the ground shortly after scoring, but remained on the pitch for the full 120 minutes, including extra time.
"We don't know exactly yet, that will be investigated in the coming period. He sustained an ankle injury when he scored against Excelsior," Bosz told ESPN. "Malik did play [Tuesday's] match, but after that he had so much trouble... it doesn't look good. He's already had an MRI scan and is still being examined. Will we lose him for a long time? Yes."
Tillman has been one of PSV's top performers this season, with 11 goals and four assists in all competitions. With the club looking to repeat as Eredivisie champions while also competing in the UEFA Champions League, his loss could come as a huge blow to the Dutch club.
Tillman and fellow US international Ricardo Pepi have scored 17 Eredivisie goals between them for PSV this season, and have combined for 20 goals in the regular season.
The Dutch club return to action this week when they host FK Crvena Zvezda in the UEFA Champions League. PSV need three points from the match to secure an automatic place in the knockout stages of the competition. They currently sit in 22nd place with eight points.
Tillman will be assessed this week to determine the severity of his injury.
