Pontevedra vs Getafe

Match preview

Pontevedra have already had a memorable run in the competition, reaching the last 16 for the first time since 1971-72.

They opened their Copa del Rey campaign with a dominant 4-1 win over Segunda Division side Levante, before stunning giants Villarreal 1-0 in the second round.

The fourth-tier side then eliminated another La Liga side in the third round with a memorable 3-0 win over 2023-24 Copa del Rey runners-up Mallorca, thanks to goals from Dalisson, Yelko Pino and Rufo Sanchez.

Pontevedra's success has not been limited to the Copa del Rey, with Yago Iglesias' side currently sitting top of Segunda Federacion - Group 1, having won 12, drawn four and lost two of their 18 league games this season.

Sunday's goalless draw with Valladolid Promesas extended their unbeaten run to 15 games since a 1-0 defeat to Marino de Luanco on 6 October.

They have also won their last six home games by a combined score of 14-3, which will give them plenty of confidence going into Wednesday's cup tie, in which the hosts are looking to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1966-67.

Getafe, meanwhile, are preparing for a second successive appearance in the last 16 of the competition after two successful Copa del Rey campaigns.

The Azulones opened their cup campaign with a 3-0 win over Manises before needing a penalty shootout to overcome sixth-placed Orihuela in the second round.

Getafe avoided another penalty shootout in their last cup tie against Segunda Division side Granada, with Borja Mayoral scoring in extra time to send his team through to the last 16.

Mayoral found the net again in Sunday's away league clash with Las Palmas, scoring the second goal in a 2-1 victory to help his side record their first La Liga away win since April and move three points clear of the bottom three.

Jose Bordalas' side are back on the road for Wednesday's Copa del Rey clash, with the visitors looking to avoid an upset and reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2018-19.

The Azulones have a history with Pontevedra in the Copa del Rey, having beaten them 2-1 after extra time the last time the two sides met in the third round in November 2004.
