Estadio Civitas Metropolitano

Atleticovs.Getafe

Match preview

Atletico were involved in a seven-goal thriller with Sevilla in La Liga last weekend, with Simeone's men coming from 3-1 down to win 4-3, Antoine Griezmann scoring the winner in the 94th minute.

The Red and Whites were also victorious in the Champions League on Wednesday, defeating Slovan Bratislava on home soil to make it 10 wins in a row in all competitions.

Atletico have won each of their last five league games against Las Palmas, Mallorca, Alaves, Real Valladolid and Sevilla, and are very much in contention for the title with 35 points from 16 games, sitting third in the La Liga standings, one point behind second-placed Real Madrid and three behind leaders Barcelona with a game in hand.

Simeone's side have also been strong at home this season, winning six and drawing two of their eight games to collect 20 points, and they will welcome a Getafe side who have taken just two points from seven away games.

Atletico have a big game away to Barcelona next weekend and there is every chance that they will finish top of the league in 2024, which would put them in an excellent position to challenge for the title in the second half of the season.

Getafe will be aware of the scale of the task this weekend as they try to stop what has become a winning machine, but Jose Bordalas' side are in good form, having won four of their last five games in all competitions.

In their last league outing, they beat Espanyol 1-0 to move up to 15th in the standings with 16 points from 16 games, thanks to a record of three wins, seven draws and six defeats.

Finding the back of the net has been a real problem this season, with Getafe the lowest scorers in La Liga with 11 goals, but they have the second-best defensive record alongside Real Madrid, having conceded just 13 goals.

As a result, it will be the league's worst attack against the league's best defence this weekend, with Atletico conceding just 11 goals, three of which came against Sevilla last time out.

Getafe have only been beaten once in all competitions since 10 November and are in the third round of the Copa del Rey, having beaten both Manises and Orihuela in the early stages of the 2024-25 tournament.

Team News

Thomas Lemar returned to the bench for Atletico's win over Slovan Bratislava, and with no new injuries reported, the Madrid giants could have a full-strength squad to choose from this weekend.

Simeone is unlikely to make many changes to the side that played in Europe, but Conor Gallagher is likely to return in a wide role, with Samuel Lino dropping to the bench.

Julian Alvarez and Griezmann are both enjoying excellent campaigns, with the former scoring 12 goals in 24 appearances and the latter 11 in 23, and the pair will be back in the final third on Sunday.

For Getafe, Carles Alena and Borja Mayoral remain on the sidelines with muscular problems, while Mauro Arambarri is suspended following his yellow card against Espanyol last time out.

Alvaro Rodriguez, on loan from Real Madrid, scored the winner against Espanyol and will continue in the final third.

The only change from last time out will be in central midfield, with Arambarri unavailable and John Patrick expected to start.
