The Seattle Sounders found out their fate at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup draw, and the road ahead will be anything but easy.
The three-time MLS champions are set to face Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Atlético de Madrid, two historic European powerhouses. Additionally, they will take on Botafogo, the reigning Copa Libertadores champions, who secured their title by defeating Atlético Mineiro in the final. All matches will take place at Lumen Field in Seattle.
PSG enter the tournament as UEFA’s second-highest-ranked team that did not win the Champions League, while Atlético de Madrid, known as “Los Colchoneros,” are ranked sixth among UEFA’s top teams. These matchups highlight the challenging task ahead for the Sounders as they aim to advance in the competition.
Seattle, who will represent MLS along with Inter Miami, earned their spot in the tournament by winning the 2022 Concacaf Champions Cup. They defeated Pumas UNAM in the final with a dominant aggregate score of 5-2, including a resounding 3-0 victory at Lumen Field.
This triumph marked the first time an MLS team claimed the regional title since the LA Galaxy’s win in 2000. On their path to glory, Brian Schmetzer’s squad overcame Honduras’ Motagua, Mexico’s León, and New York City FC before their decisive victory over Pumas.
This will mark the Sounders' second appearance at the FIFA Club World Cup. Their first came in 2022 (won by Real Madrid) when they were eliminated in the opening round after a narrow 1-0 loss to Egypt’s Al Ahly. Now, they’ll be hoping for a deeper run as they prepare to face some of the world’s most formidable clubs.
