Newcastle United beat Chelsea 2-0 in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, which means they're through to the league quarter-finals.

Newcastle United got their own back on Chelsea for losing 1-0 to them in the Premier League last weekend by beating the Blues in the League Cup.

The home team came close to taking the lead just two minutes into the game when Joelinton met a cross from Alexander Isak, but his shot hit the post and bounced out for a goal kick.

It was a stark reminder to Chelsea that they needed to be on their toes. It wasn't long before they got the message.

The home side got the lead at St James' Park in the 23rd minute thanks to Alexander Isak. The Chelsea defence hesitated, and Isak was quick to react, putting the Magpies ahead.

Just three minutes later, Eddie Howe's side doubled their lead when Axel Disasi turned a cross into his own net, making matters worse for the defence. The chaotic defending also put the Magpies under a lot of pressure in a short period of time.

Chelsea spent most of the second half trying to get back into the Newcastle penalty area, but despite the pressure, they couldn't score, which meant the end of Enzo Maresca's Carabao Cup journey.

Once the final whistle was blown, the Newcastle fans gave the team a warm round of applause. The club is now aiming to win its first major trophy since 1955. Newcastle's reaction pleased head coach Eddie Howe. They beat Chelsea 2-0 and made it through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the third year running.

The Magpies haven't won any of their last five league games, but Howe is hoping the cup victory will give the team a boost. So, Newcastle's cup win after a dip in form in the league is a big deal for the team.

"I think it was a very important moment for the team. We looked like we had goals today, scored two goals, and could have scored more goals.

"We still have areas to improve, but I think we were in a lot better shape tonight. "
