Manchester United players have been told to foot Sir Alex Ferguson's salary after Sir Jim Ratcliffe ripped up his ambassador contract.

As United attempt to streamline its finances, Ratcliffe’s decision to end Ferguson’s contract has drawn widespread criticism from several ex-players. The 82-year-old had held the ambassadorial post for over a decade, becoming a global face for the club after stepping down from management.

Amidst the controversy surrounding the termination of Ferguson’s contract, former Manchester City and England defender Stuart Pearce has floated the idea that United’s players - or even that of City's - could step in to pay the wages. Speaking to talkSPORT, Pearce said: “Wouldn't it be good if the United squad said we'll fund that money per season to keep Alex in the post because he's too important to this club? I got a little bit mischievous and thought, what if Manchester City players said, wouldn't it be good if we chipped in and paid Alex Ferguson's wages each year to keep him in place for what he's done for that club across the road, that is going to inspire us on a weekly basis. It would be classy. You've sacked your best ever but we'll fund him, it's no problem."

Despite the suddenness of the decision, it has been reported that the meeting between Ratcliffe and Ferguson was entirely cordial. Ferguson’s legacy at Manchester United remains intact, and his continued presence as a non-executive director ensures that he will still hold some role within the club. The Scot’s unparalleled success with United, including 13 Premier League titles, ensures his position as a vital figure in the club’s history.

Current manager Erik ten Hag faces his own set of challenges as United have endured a tough start to the season, sitting in 14th place in the Premier League standings. As the pressure mounts on Ten Hag, he will be hoping to turn things around in their upcoming home match against Brentford on Saturday.
