Elon Musk's name has featured on plenty of articles about Liverpool Football Club in recent days, and that's because the father of the world's richest person claimed this week that his son is interested in buying the Reds.

Appearing in an interview with Times Radio, Errol Musk said: "I can't comment on that, they'll raise the price! Oh yes, [he has expressed a desire], but that doesn't mean he's buying it. He would like to yes, obviously. Anybody would want to — so would I! His grandmother was born in Liverpool, and we have relatives in Liverpool and we were fortunate to know quite a lot of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family. So, we are attached to Liverpool you know."

While Musk, who is apparently worth well over $400billion, clearly has the financial might required to own a Premier League club, it is unlikely that he would be a popular owner with Reds supporters.

Firstly, his right-wing political views clearly don't align with the values of Liverpool as a city and as a club, and secondly, he's a self-confessed Manchester United fan.

In August 2022, three months before the Glazers announced that they were exploring potentially selling up, Musk posted on X that he was buying the club.

When Musk was asked by an X user whether he was being serious, he responded: "No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams. Although, if it were any team, it would be Man U. They were my fav team as a kid."

Unsurprisingly, it doesn't sound like Musk will be taking the reins at Anfield any time soon. The Times reported on Tuesday that Liverpool's current owners have no desire to sell the club to Musk, and that there has been no contact between the two parties. The Times added that Liverpool is not taking the comments of Musk Snr too seriously.
