Ruud van Nistelrooy is being considered by Hamburg for their head coach vacancy, according to Sky in Germany.
The 2. Bundesliga side's interest in the Dutchman comes amid Leicester also being linked with a move for Van Nistelrooy after the Foxes sacked Steve Cooper on Sunday.
The ex-Manchester United striker was considered by Leicester during the summer before they appointed Cooper and is the early bookmakers' favourite to replace the Welshman.
But Van Nistelrooy's former club Hamburg, whom he played for in the 2010/11 season, are reportedly now exploring a move for the 48-year-old.
Sky in Germany are claiming Van Nistelrooy is on the list to succeed Steffen Baumgart, with a move already being discussed internally having previously held concrete talks with him before the appointment of Baumgart.
But Van Nistelrooy is not the only name in the frame to replace Baumgart, who was sacked on Sunday, with Lukas Kwasniok, David Wagner and Torsten Lieberknecht other candidates being considered.
Van Nistelrooy is out of work having left Man Utd after not being given a role in new head coach Ruben Amorim's backroom staff.
The ex-Man Utd striker had a successful interim spell following Erik ten Hag's sacking as he managed three victories and a draw in his four games in charge.
