The Belgian goalkeeper will join up with his parent club ahead of the 14th June, which is when the competition begins. The likelihood of Penders receiving actual playing time during the World Cup is quite low. For Chelsea, the tournament primarily serves as a valuable opportunity to evaluate the progress of their under 23 players.
Penders has enjoyed a brilliant season for the Smurfs, returning on loan to his boyhood club following a £17 million move to Chelsea. The 19-year-old has kept six clean sheets in twenty matches and ,according to Fotmob, Penders has a 74.3% save percentage and has prevented 5.04 goals.
As the loan spell comes to an end, Genk would like to have him on loan for next season, although there are many other clubs in the mix. HLN reports that PSV are keen on the youngster and have already made inquiries. Chelsea’s sister club, Strasbourg, are also interested.
For Genk, they have a couple of alternatives in mind, including Fredrikstad’s number one, Jonathan Fischer.
