Six weeks ago, it seemed certain that Ajax would secure a record-breaking 37th Eredivisie title.

Ajax had not won since the 2021-22 season, but a 2-0 victory over second-placed PSV Eindhoven on 30 March put them nine points ahead.

At that point, the title race appeared over.

PSV captain Luuk de Jong admitted that with seven games left, their focus had shifted to securing second place for a Champions League spot.

"Nine points is too much - I don't think it's ever been overcome with so few games remaining. We're aiming for that second Champions League qualification," De Jong told ESPN after the game.

Fast forward one and a half months, and PSV fans were celebrating wildly in their stadium.

PSV had just secured a straightforward 4-1 win against Heracles when news arrived that Ajax conceded a 99th-minute equaliser against 10-man Groningen.

These results propelled PSV to the top, one point ahead of Ajax.

PSV won six games in a row since their defeat to Ajax, while Ajax dropped 10 points in four matches, likely due to complacency.

Ajax needed a favour from Sparta Rotterdam on the final day, but PSV's 3-1 victory ensured the title stayed in Eindhoven for another year.
