Barcelona may miss chance to sign Leverkusen defender Tah on free transfer

It looks like Barcelona are set to miss out on central defender Jonathan Tah, as Bayern Munich have moved into pole position to sign him. The Blaugrana opened talks with Tah in December and agreed terms with the German international in February, but the move appears to be falling through.

Tah has been waiting for Barcelona to clarify their salary cap situation amid doubts over their ability to register the 29-year-old this summer. However, it seems that the Blaugrana have made no progress, despite their good relationship with his agent, Pini Zahavi.

Recent reports have claimed that Barcelona were hoping to sign Tah from Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer, but had informed him that one of their central defenders would first need to leave before they could approve the deal. Tah recently said that he would be deciding on his future soon.

Now, Christian Falk of BILD has reported that the Blaugrana are aware Tah is likely to decline a move to Spain in favour of joining Bayern Munich. According to Fabrizio Romano, the German champions began talks again in April, and he claims that they are leading the race for Tah's signature. Real Madrid turned down a move for Tah earlier in the year but have been linked to him again following Xabi Alonso's arrival this summer. However, it appears they will pursue a younger option.

Many saw Barcelona vice-captain Ronald Araujo as potential collateral damage from a move for Tah. He signed a deal in January until 2031, but he has a €65m release clause in the first half of July should he wish to leave. So far, there is no indication that he intends to leave, which is part of the reason why Barcelona have been unable to sign Tah. However, it appears that their alternative, should Araujo leave, is also fading away. This could persuade Barcelona to strengthen their attempts to keep the Uruguayan.
