Venezia secured only their second Serie A victory since Christmas, triumphing 2-1 over Fiorentina at the Stadio Pierluigi Penzo. This result moved them out of the relegation zone.

Fiorentina began to dominate, and their goalkeeper, Ionut Radu, had to react quickly to tip Nicolo Fagioli’s curling shot around the post. Cher Ndour also came close as La Viola upped the ante.

Despite struggling to create chances, Venezia had a golden opportunity just before half-time, but John Yeboah pulled his shot wide after showing fantastic pace and skill to create space for himself.

The Ecuadorian then created an opportunity for his strike partner, Gaetano Oristanio, after the interval, but he lost his composure at the crucial moment.

Eusebio Di Francesco’s side didn’t give up, however, and their efforts were rewarded moments later when Fali Cande scored his first goal for the club, lashing home from close range after controlling Kike Perez’s cross.

Things got even better on 68 minutes when Radu made an incredible save to deflect Luca Ranieri’s shot onto the inside of the post. Venezia immediately swept forward and Oristanio made up for his earlier miss by heading home at the far post.

The visitors didn’t give up, though, and with 15 minutes left, they had a lifeline thanks to Rolando Mandragora, who turned and lashed the ball home.

Venezia were able to hold on, though, to claim a precious three points. This result lifts them up to 17th place, but they are still only one point above the relegation zone.

This defeat added to a disappointing week for Fiorentina, following their Europa Conference League semi-final exit, and could dash their hopes of returning to Europe, as they now sit four points adrift of the top six with only two games left to play.
