England made it two wins from two in their opening campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a stunning free-kick from Reece James helped the Three Lions to a 3-0 triumph over Latvia to extend their remarkable unbeaten home record in qualifying to 30 games (W27, D3).
Having kicked off the Thomas Tuchel era with a routine 2-0 win over Albania on Friday, England looked to continue the positive trend with a quick start against Latvia.
Unsurprisingly, the Three Lions dominated the early exchanges, but for all their possession they were fortunate not to go behind when Vladislavs Gutkovskis inexplicably missed the target from close range after a mix-up between Marc Guehi and Jordan Pickford.
Grateful for the reprieve, Tuichel's men upped the ante in search of an opener, with Ezri Konsa seeing a powerful effort tipped over the bar by Krisjanis Zviedris and Harry Kane heading wide from eight yards.
The one-way traffic showed no signs of slowing as half-time approached, and the hosts' pressure finally paid off in spectacular fashion when James curled a sublime free-kick into the top corner for his first international goal.
The opening stages of the second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with England comfortably on top and seeing plenty of the ball.
However, the Latvian rearguard held firm under pressure and limited the hosts to very few clear-cut chances, with Kane curling just wide from inside the area.
Not to be denied, England doubled their advantage in the 68th minute when Declan Rice's inviting low ball was met by Kane at the back post for his 71st goal for the Three Lions.
That all but sealed victory for Tuchel's charges, who added a third 15 minutes from time when substitute Eberechi Eze scored his first international goal with a low, deflected shot.
The visitors avoided further damage in the closing stages, with Zviedris making good saves from Morgan Rogers and Kane as England coasted to full-time and a comfortable three points in the first-ever meeting between the two nations.
