In a scorching Francistown, Algeria beat Botswana 3-1 to move above Mozambique on goal difference and return to the top of Group G.
Just before half-time, Amine Gouiri headed in a goal that home goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko saved, and Mohamed Amoura scored twice after the break to give the North African side their fourth win in five games.
In another match in the same group, Guinea drew 0-0 with Somalia, five points behind Algeria. Away goalkeeper Abdirahman Mohamud Jama did well in defence, making consecutive saves.
The top two teams in Group G of the African World Cup qualifiers will meet in five days' time when Algeria host Mozambique on 25 March at 21:00 GMT.
