Late goals from Khephren Thuram and Teun Koopmeiners earned Juventus a 2-0 home win over Hellas Verona in Serie A on Monday, extending Thiago Motta's side's unbeaten run to five games.

Juventus enjoyed the lion's share of possession and created almost 30 chances, but struggled to break the deadlock, with most of their efforts going wide and visiting goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipo making a number of good saves.

But Thuram found a way past the heroic Verona goalkeeper to score with his first touch from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute, and Koopmeiners doubled the lead with a low shot from a tight angle in the 90th minute.

Juve, who were knocked out of the Coppa Italia quarter-finals by relegation-threatened Empoli last week, are fourth on 52 points, six behind leaders Inter Milan and two clear of fifth-placed Lazio. Verona are 14th, four points above the drop zone.

The hosts, the only Italian side to win all their league games in February, closed the gap on the leaders after Inter drew at second-placed Napoli last weekend and third-placed Atalanta were held to a goalless draw at home by lowly Venezia.

The visitors went close first through Tomás Suslov and Amin Sarr, who both struck from outside the area inside seven minutes, but Juve goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio saved their efforts.

From then on, Verona rarely left their own half and were under constant attack from Juventus.

Thuram should have given the home side the lead early on when he was sent through on goal, but his shot from the penalty spot lacked power and Montipo had no problem keeping it out.

Weston McKennie thought he had made it 1-0 before the break with a close-range header from a free-kick, but his goal was disallowed for a foul on the Verona goalkeeper.

Montipo continued to threaten and Manuel Locatelli had two glorious chances saved minutes apart as the home fans grew increasingly frustrated.

It could have been worse for Juve, however, as Verona looked to have taken a shock lead in first-half stoppage time through Suslov, who fired home from distance only to have his stunning strike disallowed for offside.

Kenan Yildiz hit the side-netting for the home side after the restart and Verona continued to miss chances until Thuram found the right side of the net to put them ahead for good.

Koopmeiners doubled the advantage when he was picked out on the edge of the area and beat the Verona defence before firing past Montipo inside the near post.

Juventus have won each of their first four home league games in a calendar year for the first time since 2021.
