Yankees reliever Scott Effross will be out of action for an extended period, manager Aaron Boone indicated on Thursday.
The right-hander has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain and the injury is "going to take some time" to heal before he can get back on the mound, Boone told reporters in Tampa.
The 30-year-old got a PRP shot on Thursday. He was pulled from Tuesday's game after throwing one pitch in the eighth inning.
Effross is working his way back from Tommy John that cost him the 2023 season and back surgery that limited him to three outings in 2024. He allowed two runs on three hits with two strikeouts over 3.1 innings last year at the big league level. Effross pitched 12.2 innings over 13 outings with a 2.13 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 2022 after arriving in a trade deadline deal with the Chicago Cubs before injury ended his season.
He pitched to a 2.78 ERA and 1.052 WHIP in 32.1 innings over 27 relief appearances for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last year, striking out 28 batters to nine walks.
Also on the injury front, Boone had no update about Giancarlo Stanton's progression or an estimated time for the slugger to be back, "hopefully soon," he said.
Prospect Jorbit Vivas, held out of games due to shoulder soreness, is getting close to playing again, the skipper added.
The reigning AL Most Valuable Player is expected to make his Grapefruit League debut Saturday against the Houston Astros, Boone said. It is possible that veteran DJ LeMahieu will also see his first in-game action of the spring on Saturday but Monday night is also an option.
Right-hander Gerrit Cole will start and make his debut Friday night against Toronto.
