The Premier League have explained the decision behind the decision to overturn Everton's penalty during their dramatic 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

United thought they conceded a penalty in the fourth minute of second-half injury time after Ashley Young went down in the box. Andre Onana parried Idrissa Gueye's initial effort and as the former United winger reacted to the rebound, he went to ground under the challenge of Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire.

Andy Madley, who was at the centre of the controversy in United's clash with Arsenal, overturned the decision after consulting the pitchside monitor.

In a statement from the Premier League, the Match Centre account on X (formerly Twitter) said: "VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty to Everton for a challenge by Maguire on Young and deemed that no foul had been committed and recommended an on-field review.

"The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball."

Ruben Amorim's side came from behind in an astonishing comeback after being two goals down against Everton. The Toffees took a first-half lead after capitalising on a defensive mistake through Beto and soon after Abdoulaye Doucoure ensured that they doubled their lead.

A moment of brilliance from Bruno Fernandes reduced the arrears from a free-kick and Manuel Ugarte brought the thrilling encounter level with a superb volley past Jordan Pickford.

But the controversy was sparked in stoppage time after Madley initially pointed to the spot but following another lengthy check from the video assistant referee, the official was instructed to review the footage. After deliberation, the decision was overturned.
