Man City manager Pep Guardiola believes this is the first year his team have not performed in the Champions League.
The Premier League side were beaten 6-3 on aggregate by Real Madrid in their knockout play-off, having won just three of their league-phase games.
It is the first time Guardiola has seen his side eliminated from the Champions League prior to the round of 16, having reached two finals with Man City alone.
"It's the first year we didn't make a good Champions League season," he told TNT Sports. "We accept it and fight for next season to be here again.
"We were so lucky to be for many years in this competition, we were so satisfied to win it once, arrive at the final in another one. We have to accept that right now, this season, we are not close enough to be there, and we'll see what happens in the future."
Guardiola was also accepting on Real Madrid's win, adding that they deserved to go through to the round of 16.
