Mohamed Salah is having both his best and most frustrating season at Liverpool since his arrival. The Egyptian is putting up numbers comparable to those of the great battles between Messi and Ronaldo in their prime, but the murky contract situation is giving everyone the jitters.
The forward has not been shy at making his feelings clear time after time in the press, with comments such as ‘this is my final year’ making headlines across the world as he plays a game of brinkmanship with the team he’s trying to win a title for.
And his latest move in the one-sided game of whatever he’s playing has come in the shape of a cryptic tweet posted online in the wake of the 2-2 draw with Manchester United. There are no words, no pleas for money, just a photo.
Salah sends online message
Salah posted a picture of himself during the game, stood alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the figure of Virgil van Dijk lurking in the background at the pair about to take a free-kick.
While this may seem benign, Salah has indeed made a move to keep the conversation going so in that sense, you’ve done me, Mo. Both Alexander-Arnold and van Dijk have contracts with Liverpool that are up in the summer, with rumours rife regarding their futures, as is the same with the Egyptian.
While we can’t be certain what he means by the tweet - and to be honest, I’m not sure anyone will lose sleep over it - what’s for certain is that Salah is doing well not to derail himself during this incredible season on a personal level.
Trent himself struggled against their northwestern rivals, with many jumping to the conclusion that his poor performance was due to the fact that he had been linked heavily with a move to Real Madrid in the build-up, with some reports going so far as to say that the Spanish club were prepared to pay now for his services in January, rather than take the right-back on a free transfer in the summer.
But not Mo: while he didn’t have his best game against the side in the bottom half of the table, just 7 points off relegation, he has been in unstoppable form all year and the contract talk seems to only galvanise him as he pushes for a new deal, wherever that may be. Let’s just hope for his sake all this posturing doesn’t put off any team otherwise interested.
